Kirkuk, Iraq - Five people were killed, including four police officers, and eight wounded in separate attacks in Iraq's tense northern cities of Kirkuk and Mosul on Wednesday, police said.

Three bomb disposal agents were killed and three hurt as they attempted to defuse a car bomb at around 5:00 pm, police Major Salam Zinganah told AFP.

Separately, a policeman was killed and four injured when their car was struck by a roadside bomb in the city's south, Zinganah said.

In the insurgent-plagued city of Mosul, one employee of a communications company was killed and another injured by a "sticky bomb" attached to their car, said a local police official, who requested anonymity.

Despite an overall drop in violence in recent months, attacks on security forces and civilians remain common in Kirkuk, Mosul and in Baghdad.

The number of violent deaths fell by a third last month to 275 from 437 in June, following the pullout of US forces from urban areas.

The figure for May was 155, the lowest of any month since the US-led 2003 invasion.
