Baghdad - U.S. soldiers killed two Iraqi gunmen when their convoy was attacked in Abu Ghraib in Baghdad's western outskirts, the U.S. military said on Thursday.

One civilian was also killed and four were wounded in the attack on Tuesday in the largely Sunni Arab area near Baghdad, where two men tried to throw grenades at the U.S. convoy.

The U.S. soldiers also came under small arms fire, U.S. military spokesman Major Dave Shoupe said in a statement.

He said it was unclear who had killed and wounded the civilians.

An Iraqi police source who declined to be named said the U.S. convoy was hit by a roadside bomb, prompting U.S. soldiers to fire into the surrounding area, killing one person and wounding three members of the same family.

The U.S. military says its troops have the right to defend themselves under a security pact signed by Baghdad and Washington paving the way for a U.S. withdrawal by 2012.

U.S. troops have become an infrequent sight on Iraqi streets after combat forces withdrew from the country's towns and cities at the end of last month, shifting primary responsibilty for urban security to Iraqi forces.
