Investigation into CIA Flights Completed: Attorney-General

The Attorney-General’s office has concluded its investigation into the alleged use of Portuguese airports and airspace by the US CIA to illegally ferry terror suspects to the Guantanamo prison in Cuba.

Deputy Attorney-General Cândida Almeida confirmed last Wednesday that the investigation, which took about two years, had been concluded, but declined to elaborate on its findings.

However, some media reported the case had been shelved.

Socialist MEP Ana Gomes, one of two plaintiffs who initiated the investigation through a criminal complaint in 2007, said she would not drop her fight to uncover the truth on whether Portuguese governments between 2002 and 2006 had been complicit with the CIA’s extraordinary rendition programme.

Portuguese officials have repeatedly denied any wrongdoing or knowledge of the secret CIA flights.
