Attorneys Question Jury Pool in Iraq Slay Case

Louisville, Ky. - Attorneys for an ex-soldier charged in federal court with killing an Iraqi family are asking for information on potential jurors.

They argue that the potential jury pool is lacking African-Americans.

Former Fort Campbell soldier Steven D. Green is to go on trial in Paducah on April 27 on murder and rape charges and could face the death penalty if convicted. Jury selection is scheduled to start Monday.

Green's attorneys say the region the jury pool was drawn from is nearly 9 percent African-American. Of the 330 potential jurors in Green's case who responded to a questionaire, only 13, or 3.9 percent, said they are black. Green is white.

Prosecutors and attorneys for Green did not return phone messages seeking comment Tuesday.
