CBS News Hails Military Ruling in Haditha Case

From the Associated Press

March 13, 2009

Camp Pendleton - CBS News is applauding a military judge's refusal to subpoena unaired footage of a "60 Minutes" interview with a key defendant in a Marine squad's assault that killed 24 Iraqis in 2005.

The network says the material that prosecutors sought was not critical to the government's case against 28-year-old Staff Sgt. Frank Wuterich. It calls Lt. Col. Jeffrey Meeks' decision a "significant victory" that confirms the principles of a free press.

Meeks ruled Thursday at Camp Pendleton that forcing CBS to hand over the footage would place the network in the role of being a government tool.

Wuterich, of Meriden, Conn., is charged with nine counts of voluntary manslaughter and other allegations. They stem from his role leading a squad of Marines in an assault after a bombing in the Iraqi city of Haditha killed one of his men.
