Seattle – A former Blackwater security guard under investigation for a shooting death in Iraq has been hired as a prison guard in Monroe.

The Department of Corrections says Andrew Moonen was hired in February at the Monroe Correctional Complex. A spokeswoman says he passed a criminal background check and remains employed.

The 28-year-old Seattle man is a former Army Ranger who was working for Blackwater on Christmas Eve 2006 when the bodyguard of the Iraqi vice president was shot to death in Baghdad.

The case has been discussed in congressional testimony.

The U.S. attorney's office in Seattle is investigating Moonen, and says it will decide by the end of this month whether to seek an indictment.
