San Antonio - The parents of a San Antonio soldier recently acquitted of murder charges in connection with the death of a suspected Iraqi insurgent said they never lost hope their son would be cleared.

Army Sgt. 1st Class Trey Corrales was acquitted by a military court in Hawaii last week.

Even as military prosecutors were seeking the death penalty, his parents said they always knew their son, who graduated from Burbank High School, was not guilty.

Military attorneys tried to convince a jury the Army Ranger platoon leader committed premeditated murder and instructed a subordinate to kill the wounded Iraqi, but after three days of testimony and nearly eight hours of deliberations, he was found not guilty on all charges.

His parents said that even with the threat of incarceration, the criminal charges might have saved his life. While awaiting trial, 10 of Corrales' former platoon members were killed in a helicopter crash.

Corrales plans to continue with his military career, said his parents. He's currently awaiting a promotion and is expected to receive his second Bronze Star, both of which were on hold pending his trial.
