A former Riverside police officer and Iraq war veteran returned to federal court Monday.

Jose Luis Nazario has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter charges in connection with the killing two unarmed detainees in Fallujah, Iraq in 2004. He is charged in federal court because he is no longer in the military.

Nazario's appearance Monday was in connection with motion that was withdrawn. He will return to court on March 3 for motions pertaining to jurisdiction and other court issues, said his attorney, Kevin McDermott.

In the same case, charges have been refiled in military court against Marine Sgt. Jermaine Nelson on suspicion of murder of an unknown foreign national.
