Sgt. Evan Vela is accused of premeditated murder.

The family of a U.S. Army ranger, Sergeant Evan Vela, says a judge will send Vela's murder case to trial.

Vela’s father, Curtis Carnahan, says this decision was expected, but the family believes the trial is just to appease the Iraqi government.

Two other U.S. soldiers went to trial for similar murder charges but were acquitted.

Vela, who grew up in St. Anthony and graduated from Rigby High School, is charged with shooting an unarmed Iraqi civilian last summer on a sniper mission.

Vela says he was following orders by Army superiors.

No word yet on the trial's start date.
