By KSAT.com October 31, 2007 San Antonio - A soldier from
San Antonio has been charged with premeditated murder, assault and
obstruction of justice while serving in Iraq. Army Sgt. Leonardo Trevino,
30, is accused of killing a man during a firefight between U.S. soldiers and
alleged Al Qaida insurgents on June 24 in a town north of Baghdad. According to his wife,
Trevino was part of a small kill team ordered to clear out insurgents in a
hostile area. Click here to find out more! The team exchanged gunfire
with the insurgents - killing one and wounding another, she said. Trevino and other soldiers
tracked the wounded man to a home where he was killed, Trevino said. The death came just weeks
after six men under Trevino's command were killed by an IED. Trevino was scheduled to go
on the mission, but a friend stepped in for him. "I know that he was out
just doing his job, he's not a murderer," Veronica Trevino said.
"We all believe he is innocent." Family members said they're
standing by their beloved soldier. "We are very confident
that the attorney will prove he is an innocent individual," Maria
Valadez, Trevino's mother, said. "No matter what the outcome is, he is
proud to be an American soldier." Trevino is the second
soldier in San Antonio to be charged with murder. Earlier this year, Trey
Corrales, 35, who graduated from the same San Antonio high school, was
charged with killing an Iraqi civilian. Although the men don't know
each other, their families have been in contact. Government officials aren't
providing many details about the incident. External link: http://www.ksat.com/news/14476074/detail.html |
