Idaho Soldier Accused of Murder will get Open Hearing Nov. 10

Idaho Falls - A U.S. soldier from eastern Idaho who is on trial for murder will get an open hearing Nov. 10.

Sergeant Evan Vela is accused of killing an unarmed Iraqi civilian, then trying to cover it up by planting a weapon on his body.

Vela's civilian defense lawyer had earlier asked the hearing be closed to the media because of classified information expected to be discussed.

Vela, who is 23, has said his sniper team was following orders when it shot men during two separate incidents in a Sunni-dominated area south of Baghdad in April and May.

Curtis Carnahan, Vela's father, recently returned from Iraq.

Carnahan calls Iraq a dirty, ugly place, and says he was lucky to miss an incident where rockets were fired into the camp where he had been staying.
